The above quote was said in response to how many Jews Canada will be letting into the country. Little did this official know that one day Canada would become "home to the 5th-largest Jewish community in the world" (Schoenfeld). After World War II, 40,000 Holocaust survivors immigrated to Canada hoping for a peaceful place to live or because they had relatives there. Canada further embraced Jews that had left Africa as well. The Jews soon became members of Canadian society leaving terrible memories of the Holocaust behind. Their children were to become successful doctors, lawyers, accounts... etc. over the years. Furthermore, the Jewish population moved to the suburbs which helped grow cities with Synagogues and other public buildings following suit. Canada had also created a Human Rights Legislation that "...removed discriminatory practices which have previously been common" (Schoenfeld). Moreover, not only did Canada welcome 40,000 survivors, Canadian troops liberated the Westerbork Transit Camp in the Netherlands. Canada also helped create the Ottawa Protocol on Combating Antisemitism and was the first country to sign it. To continue, the country is a part of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Even though Canada wasn't directly affected by the Holocaust, Canadians still try to do their part in remembering the Holocaust and helping the survivors however they can (Schoenfeld).
